Robert Stevens Long, 66, of St. Louis Park and St. Augustine, FL died at his residence in Florida on March 21, 2005. Survived by wife Phyllis, son Alan and numerous extended family members. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a masters degree in microbiology. Upon graduation he moved to the east coast and did research at Yale. He returned to Illinois where he received his medical degree. He moved to Minnesota where in 1972 he became a staff doctor at Hennepin County Medical Center, where he helped to modernize care for emergency patients. He became director of prehospitalization emergency medical services at HCMC. He taught medical students, new doctors, ambulance drivers, police officers and firefighters. He helped form and served on the volunteer Metrodome first aid team. He retired from HCMC in 1998 and moved to St. Augustine, FL. He also completed a dream of being a certified aircraft mechanic. He also was heavily involved in Boy Scouts during the 80's. He enjoyed home remodeling, building and fixing computers. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on April 29 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 5025 Knox Av. S., Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to the family for the Ernie and Bernice Ruiz Professorship in Emergency Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

I remember Dr. Long for his tireless efforts while he worked at HCMC. I met him while I was a dispatcher for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department about the time that the 'paramedic concept' and Metro West EMS Communications System was being introduced to ambulance services throughout Hennepin County. I also attended many seminars that he conducted for Police, Fire and EMS personnel. I have very fond memories of both Dr. Long and Dr. G. Patrick Lilja (who is now the director of the E.R. at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.) Dr. Long touched many lives and he and Dr. Lilja are the reason why Hennepin County has an EMS system that is second to none. Both are dynamic, untiring individuals who Hennepin County can be very proud of and Hennepin County residents have them to thank for making the delivery of emergency medical services streamlined and efficient. Thanks to both of them.
I remember working at radio station KCHK in New Prague (Minnesota) when Deputy Niwman was killed. Being a former law enforcement officer, I was very saddened.

Betty Joan (Rubert) Fortin, age 78 of Plymouth. Died peacefully May 1, 2005 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Preceded in death by beloved grandson, Robbie Raguet. Betty was born in Ottumwa, IA on Jan. 30, 1927 to Roy and Rue Rubert. At age 2, her family moved to the Parkers Lake area, where she resided for the rest of her life. Her parents and sisters, Barb Nelson and Pat Lebo, preceded her in death. Betty loved art, rocks, animals, recipes, camping, playing cards and music. She was the first majorette at Wayzata H.S., a lifelong member of Messiah United Methodist Church, where her service was held at 11AM on Thursday, May 5, 2005.

Betty and her husband Phil were neighbors of my family when we moved to Plymouth (Minnesota) in the winter of 1953-1954. The whole area was basically farmland with just a few houses scattered here and there. Of the many fond memories of the Fortin's that I have, the one that stands out the most is their buiding an in-ground swimming pool in their backyard; it was the first one in the area. The other thing I remember is taking my dad's 8MM film projector up to my bedroom on the second floor of our house and showing my family's home movies out my bedroom window onto the side of the Fortin's house. My idea back in the early 1950's became what is now known as the outdoor movie theater.

Eventually, I also became a deputy with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department and was assigned to the Communications Division. Archie was subsequently promoted to Detective in the Criminal Division within the Sheriff's Department and we continued to have many memorable, professional encounters during our law enforcement careers.

Of his many traits that I especially enjoyed was the way that Archie could remember (and relate) all of the details of the many, many cases he investigated (and solved).  Archie was 'one of a kind'!

I met Marty many years ago after moving to Cologne. He always was a pleasure to be around and talk with and will be missed by his many friends, his family and his loving wife Pat..

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm Free. - I'm following the path God laid for me.

I went to Him when I heard Him call. - I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day - To eat, to run, to work or play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way. - I simply had to go away.

If my parting has left a void, - Then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a walk, a kiss. - Ah yes, these things I, too, will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow. - I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life's been full, I savored much. - Good friends, good times, my master's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. - Don't lengthen it now with undo grief.

Lift up your heart and share with me.

God wanted me now. He set me Free!

In 1961 he was appointed jail consultant for the State of MN inspected jails and penal institutions. He then took the position of Chief Jailer of the Hennepin County Jail and was instrumental in remodeling the 70-year-old facility. Robert and his wife Virginia were the last family to reside in the apartment on the 5th floor of the Hennepin County Courthouse. They were trendsetters in Mpls. downtown living. He ended his career as Undersheriff of Hennepin County under the term of Sheriff Donald Omodt. Mr. McLane, a veteran of World War II, was active in many civic organizations and community affairs. He served on several Governors' Advisory Councils including the Governor's Commission on Crime and the Governors' Commission on youth, president of Willmar PTA and chairman of the Minnesota State PTA Committee on Youth, member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scout Counselor, Kiwanis and an officer of several fraternal organizations including the Fraternal Order of Masons. He and Virginia retired to their beloved acreage on Sunset Lake near Deerwood, MN. There, together they tirelessly built a beautiful home of split rock and rustic cedar all done by their own hands. They planted raspberries, strawberries, concord grapes and a vegetable garden to feed a small town. They, with the help of family, planted 35,000 small pines, which now leave a towering, verdant memorial to a man who always thought big. Robert was a gregarious, generous, hard working man with no boundaries of love for his family and life. He lived life large and will be greatly missed, but his lessons of life will live long with his family. Go to your woods and lake dear father, and until we meet again we'll keep planting those pines for you. Private family interment Greenlawn Cemetery, Wayzata. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.

John was a friend of mine while we were attending Wayzata Elementary and High Schools. He was a tall blonde and somewhat skinny kid, like me (tho, I wasn't as tall.) For that reason, when our 6th grade (I think) class presented the play RIP VAN WINKLE, I played the 'young Rip' and John played the 'older Rip' after he woke up from his twenty year siesta. We both graduated and went our separate ways but when I moved back to Plymouth in 1985, we reestablished contact. The reason for that reestablished was because my lawn mower quit working and I needed someone I could trust to fix it. John was that person. A great guy who'll be surely missed.

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul:

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name' sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;

Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;

Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

Wayzata Blvd, Wayzata and 1 hour before the service on Friday at church. Interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

I have a lot of great memories about my good friend Gary. When I first met him, I was a Maple Plain Police Officer who was scheduled to go to work for Orono PD in 1969. At the 'last minute', I decided to remain with Maple Plain and Gary was hired to fill the position in Orono that I was going to take. When he learned that he was going to be hired by Orono, Gary forgot that his small son Terry was taking a nap and he raced raced out of their house in Robbinsdale en route to the Orono Village hall to meet with Chief Jerry Ross. When he returned home, Terry was still sleeping.

I had a lot of professional and social contact with Gary and thoroughly enjoyed his great company and sense of humor.

Curt and I worked together in the Warrant/Fugitive Division of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office back in the late '70's and early '80's. He was always a lot of fun to work with and when I retired from the Sheriff's Office, Curt was in charge of the Extradition Process. Interestingly enough, when Curt's dad died back in about the late 70's, I bought his house on a Contract for Deed from Curt. I don't remember Curt or his wife Virginia having any kids and  I visited both Curt and Virginia on occasion at their home in Northeast Minneapolis.

I first met Ruth when I was selling PRIMESTAR Satellite Television back in 1994-95. Her and her husband Bob lived out in the country just northwest of Cologne. When we decided to install our wood burning stove, it was Ruth's husband Bob, and his brother, that did the 'brickwork' for the hearth. The wood stove was replaced by a new corn burning stove in the fall of 2005 and now, as then, everytime we look at the hearth, we think of Bob and his wife Ruth.ry.

Elaine graduated as valedictorian in 1961 from Arlington-Green Isle High School and served as Office Manager for many businesses after graduation.  Most recently, she worked at the Cenex C-Store in Cologne.

Elaine was a lover of science fiction and romance. She liked to ice fish, play sheep head and assemble puzzles. She enjoyed working with her mother with baking, gardening and candy making. Elaine was a member of the New Rome Night Owls Home Extension Group and a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Green Isle Township and was active in it's organizations.

Elaine is survived by her husband Randy of Arlington, son Joseph of Le Sueur, Daughter Rachel and husband Eric Wirtz of Cologne, three grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Zion Lutheran Church in Green Isle Township

Elaine was one of the nicest people that anyone could ever meet. I remember meeting her in one of my many daily trips into the Cenex Convenience Store in Cologne. Elaine was always a pleasure to talk to and had a never-ending smile and warm, pleasant greeting for everyone.

Elaine's unexpected death came as a totally unexpected shock to me. Never did I, or anyone else, have any inkling that Elaine would be suddenly taken away from all of her many relatives and friends.

With her passing, Elaine has reminded us all of just how fragile life really is. A wonderful woman with a cheery smile, a positive outlook on life, a pleasant person to have had the honor of knowing; that's how I'll always remember Elaine.

Although she will surely be missed, her warm personality will always be remembered by everyone whose lives she touched..

Olive L. Warzeka, age 87, of Waconia. Survived by loving son, Jim; sisters, Jenness Kragnes and Jean Underhill. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, February 18, 2005 at 11:00 AM, St. Martin's Catholic Church, Geneseo, North Dakota. Visitation Friday 5-7:30 PM, Johnson Funeral Home, Waconia, 952-442-2121 and 1 hour prior to the Mass at church. Interment Church Cemetary.

I first met Ollie and Buck back in the winter of 1994-1995 when they and their only child, Jim, lived in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota. I was to their home a few times but the 'shining jewel' of their lives was their cabin on Lake Waverly. Most of their summers were spent at 'the lake' in their cozy cabin that has just recently been renovated.

Most recently, Ollie worked with her son Jim at Custom Formulations in Cologne. Many times I recall walking into Custom Formulations and being greeted by Ollie. She always had a nice smile and a good work for everyone.

Ollie is now with back, once again, with her loving husband of many years, Buck, but her memory will live on forever.

Sergeant James W. Anderson (J.W.) was shot and killed August 31, 1982 while answering a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex on Rice Street. As he entered the apartment building lobby, the suspect shot him in the chest three times. The man then fled and took hostages in the local post office before committing suicide.

Sergeant Anderson had worked in law enforcement for thirteen years and worked for the six man Wayzata Police Department for only one year. Prior to joing the Wayzata Police Department, Sergeant Anderson worked for the Police Department in Minnetonka, a neighboring community to Wayzata. He was killed on his 36th birthday and is survived by his fiancee and three sons.

I first met J.W. when he worked for the Minnetonka Police Department and I was a dispatcher for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department. Jim was a good cop who had many friends and was a credit to law enforcement.

When former Minnetonka Police Detective Dave Brehm was hired as the Police Chief in Wayzata, J.W. left the Minnetonka Police Department and became an officer for the Wayzata Police Department and rose to the rank of Sergeant.

I continue to remember him well.

Here was a man that always, and I mean ALWAYS, was smiling and had an infectious laugh!!

I first met John when I was a Policeman in Maple Plain, Minnesota back in the late 1960's. At that time, John worked in the Patrol Division of the Sheriff's Office and he would frequently go through Maple Plain during his tour of duty. He was a giant of a man with an even bigger heart. And, he was a good cop, too.

I will always remember 'Big John' as many, including me, referred to him.l

I   first met Bud when we moved to Cologne back in 1989. He was the owner of the only car wash in town and a few years ago, installed one of the first 'Touch Free' car washes in the area. Bud always had a smile or a 'wave' for everyone and I enjoy knowing some of his children; particularly his daughter Joyce who works at the Cenex Convenience Store in Cologne (across the parking lot from Bud's car wash) and who must have inherited his pleasant personality.

Bud will be greatly missed by all of his family and many friends from the area that had the pleasure of knowing him.

Survived by children, sons Dan (Marla), Mark, Bernie (Sue), daughters Sharon (Larry) Hafften, Bonnie (Jeff) Jacobs; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren. Private family services were held at Fort Snelling National Cem

I first met Harold and Marie Buelow way back in 1967 when I began my Law Enforcement career with the Maple Plain Police Department.

'Harold's Cafe' was the only place in town to eat and I spent many a morning, afternoon and evening eating my meals there while I was on patrol in Maple Plain. At suppertime, Sherry, Harold's daughter, always had to watch the television program 'Laugh In' and I must admit that on those nights when the show was on, I may have taken a little longer to eat than normal.

I hadn't seen Harold (or Marie) in many, many years but will always remember the fun times and good food that I always enjoyed at 'Harold's Cafe' (now McGarry's) in Maple Plain.etery.

I met Florence when I began my Law Enforcement career in Maple Plain (Minnesota) back in April of 1967. At that time, Florence was a teller, along with Frank James, at the State Banf of Maple Plain. C. Paul Williams was the bank's president.

Florence always had a smile for every bank customer she met and was an excellent representative of the bank that she worked for for so many years. I can't even begin to count the thousands of dollars that I handed to Florence for her to deposit into my account.

Florence was a true professional and personal and business acquaintance and I'm sure she will be missed by her family and all of the customers of the Bank of Maple Plain.

William O. Manning, a former Wayzata educator, school board member and wrestling coach who led an effort to help students and adults with alcohol or drug problems, died at his Tucson, Arizona home on February 22, 2007. Bill coached Wayzata High School to state wrestling championships in 1951, 1952 and 1953. He began teaching in Wayzata in 1950. His subjects were English, social studies, health and physical education. Manning, who became principal of Wayzata High School in 1970, retired in the early 1980s. In 1985, he won election to the Wayzata school board, serving several years. Bill earned his doctorate in education at the University of South Dakota in 1970. He had been a college wrestler at Purdue University, Indiana, but his athletic career was cut short when he was injured as a freshman. In the 1960s, he was a Big 10 Conference wrestling official. In addition to his wife and son Patrick, he is survived by sons Steve, of Tucson, and Tom, of Hamel, Minnesota; daughter Linda Rebling, of Tucson, and six grandchildren.

A memorial and a celebration of his life was held at the Santa Catalina Catholic Church in Tucson, Arizona on Thursday, March 1, 2007 at 10:30 AM. An additional Celebration was held at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Wayzata, Minnesota on Friday April 13, 2007.

How well I remember 'Mr. Manning' during my junior and senior high school years. All of us high school kids used to refer to him as 'Wild Bill' when we knew he wasn't nearby or listening. I remember very distinctly Mr. Manning having his doctors degree in education and he was one of very few (if any) educators in the area that had a 'Dr,' before his name.

Not only was Mr. Manning the director of athletics at Wayzata High School, I also remember him as the instructor for the boys 'Health Class'.  He always had a nice comment when you met him in the hallway and always flashed a smile to us impressionable, young kids.

He also wasn't afraid to use the 'fanny paddle' on gym class students that needed their attention gained or their attitude adjusted.

There should be more 'Wild Bills' and fanny paddles in this country.

Glenn Dahl was probably the first policeman that I really ever knew. I met Glenn when I was working at Wayzata Rexall Drug in the Colonial Square Shopping Center after I graduated from high school.

When I began my Law Enforcement career with the Maple Plain Police Department in 1967, Glenn was very instrumental in helping me set of a filing system and teaching me allot of what I found to be very useful during those initial days, weeks, months and years of my chosen career.

I also knew Glenn's former wife Mary and children and went to their home numerous times and talked about various topics of mutual interest.

The last contact I had with Glenn was about ten or twelve years ago. Glenn had just purchased a townhome in Hopkins and received a satellite television 'mailer' that I sent to all new homeowners when I was selling satellite TV systems. It was enjoyable to again talk with a good friend after so many years.
